The Susan B. Anthony Center (SBAC) is the
only agency in Broward County providing
a residential program specifically designed
for women in recovery that allows their
children to live with them while they undergo
treatment, and has a staff that is highly
qualified to work specifically with this
population. The center provides the mothers
and their children with up to 18 months
of housing while the mothers undergo substance
abuse treatment. Besides the transitional
housing services, the clients receive transportation
to all services.
The children, who are at risk for substance
abuse problems as well as a number of developmental
problems; receive developmental assessments
plus intervention services; while
their mothers receive parental skills training,
life-skills training and vocational/educational
training which empowers them to care for
their families; once they graduate from
the residential program. Upon graduation;
families can continue to receive individual
and group counseling, case management, medical
treatment, recreation, and day care for
up to three years through their participation
in the Aftercare program
“In providing these services for the substance-addicted women and their children,
our ability to combat the impact that drug
and alcohol abuse has on these families,
is enhanced”, says Ms. Currant; who originally
developed the program over eight (8) years
ago under the sponsorship of the Junior
League of Greater Ft. Lauderdale. “Keeping
families together in a supervised residential
setting while they heal from the effects
of substance abuse results in healthy bonding
between mothers and children” continues
Ms. Currant; who served as Administrator
of the Foster Care program for the Department
of Children and Families in Broward County,
prior to developing the Susan B. Anthony
Center’s programs in 1995.
