Recovery Center

A safe place to start again

Mission

Our mission is to enhance the lives of women with children, who are recovering from substance abuse, to provide the means for women with children to continue their recovery and to facilitate the preservation and restoration of a healthy family unit. As a registered 501.(c)3, we have provided essential help to more than two hundred thirty-three (235) families since opening our doors in September of 1995.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The STOP THE CYCLE project provides transitional housing and a comprehensive array of supportive services for substance-addicted women and their children in Broward County and throughout South Florida.  At the present time, the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center is the only agency in the county providing a residential program specifically designed for women in recovery that allows their children to live with them while they undergo treatment, and has a staff that is highly qualified to work specifically with this population.  The children are at risk for substance abuse problems as well as a number of developmental problems.  The Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center provides the mothers and their children with up to 18 months of housing while the mothers undergo substance abuse treatment.  Besides the transitional housing services, the clients receive transportation to all services.  The children receive developmental assessments, plus intervention services while mothers receive parental skills training. Families receive individual and group counseling, case management, medical treatment, recreation, and day care.

In providing these services for the substance-addicted women and their children, our ability to combat the impact drug and alcohol abuse is having on families will be enhanced.  Keeping families together in a supervised residential setting while they heal from the effects of substance abuse will result in healthy bonding between mother and children.  Through assessments and appropriate interventions, a child’s developmental problems can be measured and addressed.  Mothers in our program learn parenting skills through parenting classes and by participating in the intervention programs of their own children.  Mothers also participate in domestic violence classes while residing in our center.  The services are delivered in a manner that empowers mothers to participate actively in their recovery process while residing in a safe environment.  Aftercare is also provided to support families who have left the security of the residential facility to move out on their own

The target population for the STOP THE CYCLE project includes substance-addicted women and their children who live at or near the poverty line.  Mothers are eligible if they have completed a minimum of thirty days of drug treatment services, have custody of at least one child under seven, and can perform basic living activities without assistance.  Families of any race/creed or ethnicity are eligible for services.

Collaboration with other agencies has enhanced our ability to provide quality services to our clients.  Partnering agencies supplement the services our professional staff provide for our children through the provision of day care services, case management services, medical treatment, parenting services, and resources for our staff.  Volunteers are also beneficial to the project.  Volunteers have a great impact on our program through their involvement, particularly in the areas of tutoring and babysitting with the younger children and life skills coaching and mentoring to the mothers and older children. Administrative support is also a valuable donation volunteers provide year long. High School students are encouraged and welcomed to volunteer their services at Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center.

In addition we are seeking to set up training curriculums designed to meet the needs of corporate partners, who will in turn provide higher paying job opportunities for our clients. .  We hope to establish partnerships that will provide on-the-job training opportunities for our clients in the near future.
